There are hundreds of different patient-facing roles in healthcare, and some of them – like becoming a medical assistant – can get you started in a medical career in less time than you think.

Medical assistants are vital support personnel who help keep hospitals, physicians’ offices, and other healthcare facilities running by taking on a lot of different administrative and clinical responsibilities. They often perform tasks like recording patient histories and updating their medical records, taking vital signs, drawing and preparing blood samples, assisting physicians and nurses with exams, scheduling appointments, working with insurance and payment information, and more.

Sound interesting? Now let’s talk about why Casa Loma College has the right medical assisting program for you.

The Barrier to Entry Is Low

At Casa Loma, we understand that you can’t afford to spend years sitting in a classroom, which is why we make it easy and efficient to start a new healthcare career. Our Medical Assistant certificate program can be completed in as little as 32 weeks – that’s eight short months from first class to graduation.

We used the standards of the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) to create a blended learning program that combines online and in-person classes. We prioritize practical, hands-on experiences for our medical assisting students, both through lab work and through clinical externships in a variety of healthcare settings. Our goal is to ensure each and every Medical Assistant student is skilled, qualified, and ready to go in areas like:

  • Utilizing medical software and electronic health records with privacy and confidentiality in mind
  • Collecting blood and other lab specimens
  • Understanding insurance terminology and coding guidelines
  • Managing patient appointments and records
  • Understanding anatomy, physiology, clinical procedures, and safety standards

It’s Affordable and Accessible

Most of us don’t have a pile of money to throw at a four-year degree. You want to invest in your education and your future, but you also don’t want to wind up financially underwater.

At Casa Loma, our mission is to provide our students with an education that will better their lives and make a positive impact on their communities without leaving them drowning in debt. We keep the tuition of our Medical Assistant certificate program affordable. We strongly encourage you to research the cost of other Medical Assisting programs and you find Casa Loma College is thousands of dollars less than other colleges in Southern California.  Also, financial aid is available for those who qualify. Our financial aid team is staffed with professionals who know how to navigate the ins and outs of college financing and are ready to help you every step of the way.

We Make Transitioning to the Workforce Easy

The faculty and staff at Casa Loma are not just here for you when you’re sitting in one of our desks. We want to help you build your medical assisting career from the ground up, from the first time you contact us to graduation and beyond.

The first part of this is ensuring we prepare you to sit for a number of different certification exams by giving you practical training in cutting-edge medical equipment and the latest best practices. Being certified isn’t always a requirement to practice as a medical assistant, but most employers will be looking for candidates who hold one of the following:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologists
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the National Healthcareer Association
  • Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) from the National Healthcareer Association

After that, our career services team kicks into gear. We help you get ready for the job market with resume building and interview preparation, and we leverage Casa Loma College’s connections with local medical facilities and employers to connect you with the latest job openings. We have a whole host of resources at your disposal – as a student, a graduate, and an alumnus – throughout your career.

Medical Assisting Jobs in California Are In-Demand

Medical assistants are in high demand all over the United States, and that’s even more true in the state of California. According to Projections Central from the U.S. Department of Labor, job opportunities for medical assistants in California are projected to grow by 20% through 2030, with around 14,000 openings expected each year. This makes it one of the fastest-growing professions in the already rapidly expanding medical field.

The majority of these openings will likely be in physicians’ offices, as they employed close to 60% of all medical assistants in 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other potential employers include state, local, and private hospitals; outpatient care centers; and other health practitioners like residential nursing homes.
