Diagnostic Medical Sonography Degree Program
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program is opportunity to work in a fast-growing field of healthcare. This program enables people to work as a diagnostic medical sonographer or sonographer for short. They use imaging equipment, including soundwave technology, to image various parts of the body. These medical imaging tests, called ultrasounds, allow doctors to make medical health care decisions for patients. Sonographers are trained to acquire these images and then analyze the images to provide doctors with key data and information needed to make decisions.
Those who work as sonographers will learn how to use the equipment, gather images, and use them to help make an accurate diagnosis. To do this, they need advanced training. This often includes earning an associate’s degree, which can be completed in less than two years, and includes classes in sciences and anatomy. Students will complete hands-on training using medical sonography equipment while also obtaining clinical experience.
Once completing their education in sonography, students will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam. This is conducted by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Those who work in this field will find key opportunities for them. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the median annual wage for someone working in this field is $75,780 a year. The organization as notes that those with an associate degree in DMS students will be in demand, with a projected growth in jobs from 2019 to 2029 of 17 percent, which is much faster than average.Those with this degree may find employment opportunities throughout Nashville. This includes specialized private organizations, including women’s treatment programs, prenatal programs, hospitals, and medical centers. Nashville General Hospital and Curahealth Nashville are additional organizations that offer these services to patients.

This is an exciting and opportune time to pursue a career in Medical Sonography! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to grow 17 percent through 2029. That’s over four times the average for all occupations. Most of these will probably be employed at imaging centers and state, local, or private hospitals, which employed 61% of all sonographers in 2019.
