Information about the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act/HEERF (Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund)

The U.S. Department of Education has made available to Casa Loma College, emergency grant funds from the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act/HEERF (Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund.  These funds are to provide relief to students whose lives have been disrupted and/or negatively impacted, because of the coronavirus/COVID-19 global pandemic.

These funds are being made available to assist students, whose education-related expenses, such as housing, food, healthcare, and child-care, have been impacted because of the coronavirus/COVID-19 global pandemic.  Once the funds have been received, based on guidelines established by the Department of Education, the College will determine which students will receive the cash grants.

On July 10, 2020, Casa Loma College submitted the signed Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which was approved for funding on July 14, 2020.  The amount of funding made available for emergency grants to students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic is $253,255.00.

On July 20, 2020, Casa Loma College submitted the signed  Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement for the Institutional Portion of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Formula Grants Authorized by Section 18004(a)(1) of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which was approved for funding on July 28, 2020.  The amount of funding made available to the College as an emergency grant to cover costs associated with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is $253,254.00.

Guidelines established by the Department of Education to receive funds are as follows:

• To be considered for receipt of the CARES Act/HEERF funds, students must be Title IV eligible, currently attending classes, and achieving SAP

• Funds must first be awarded to students who exhibit the most need as established by the EFC on their most recent FAFSA application

• To be considered for receipt of the CARES Act/HEERF funds, students must complete the CARES HEERF Recipient Funding Request and Certification form and provide documentation their education-related expenses, such as housing, food, healthcare, and child-care, have been impacted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic

• The College retains jurisdiction over which students are eligible to receive the funds and the amount of funding they receive
• Students approved to receive funds will be notified via email. Recipients will begin to receive a one-time disbursement beginning July 27, 2020

• Checks must be negotiated within ninety (90) days of the date of the check. If the check is not negotiated, it will become invalid and the student will forfeit the funding.  No checks will be reissued

• If you are a dependent student who depends entirely upon your parent(s) for support and payment of your expenses, if they have been negatively impacted by the pandemic, you may also consider yourself to be; this also holds true for impacted spouses

The Federal government, under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, specifically from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF), has made available funding to be awarded to students, who have been negatively impacted by the Coronavirus/COVID – 19 global pandemic.

These funds are being made available to assist students whose education-related expenses have been impacted, such as food, housing, healthcare, and child-care, because of the Coronavirus/COVID -19 global pandemic.

If you have been negatively impacted by the Coronavirus/COVID -19 global pandemic in any of the above named areas, please complete this form (be sure to give names, dates, monetary amounts, etc.) and submit it along with any and all documentation to support your claim.  Your information will be evaluated, and you will be notified of whether or not, you have been awarded funds and the amount you will receive.  Thank you.

As of the above date, Casa Loma College has received the student portion of the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act/HEERF (Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund funds, in the amount of $253,255.00.  The neediest students, as determined by a zero (“0”) EFC on their most recent FAFSA application, who do the following:

• Complete the CARES HEERF Recipient Funding Request and Certification form, and
• Supply supporting documentation regarding the information on the form, and
• Are approved;

will receive an award amount of $6,345.00.  There are approximately fifty (50) students who meet the zero (“0”) EFC criteria, therefore there are not enough funds to distribute to all fifty (50) of those students.  Based on the funds received, the College will have the ability to award approximately thirty-nine (39) students, therefore these funds will be awarded on a “first come – first served” basis.  If there are funds remaining after all zero (“0”) EFC students have been awarded, further awards will be made based on an upward sliding EFC scale.  This means students having EFC’s above zero will be awarded next.  The higher the EFC, the less chance the student will have to be awarded funds.

On the above date, the College also received institutional CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act/HEERF (Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund funds, in the amount of $253,254.00.  These funds may be used by the College to cover any costs associated with significant changes to the delivery of instruction due to the coronavirus, such as hardware, software, or internet connectivity investments made.  Funds may also be used to pay the College’s employees (except for senior administrative and executive salaries) and contractors during the period of disruption related to the coronavirus.

For student and institutional funds received, circumstances regarding the impact of the coronavirus must have occurred on or after March 13, 2020, the date of the Proclamation of National Emergency.  Student funds should be distributed to students within one year from the above date; institutional funds should be used within one year from the above date.

To date, there have been five (5) students, (of the thirty-nine [39] available awards) who have qualified for and been awarded emergency grant funds in the amount of $6,345.00 each; totaling $31,725.00 of funds disbursed; thirty-four awards remain.
